There are lots of different colors of horses. Some you may have already known about (like bay, black, gray, etc.) but some terms may be new to you. We hope this page will really help you learn all you can about the horse life we all love!! Enjoy!
Bay - A bay horse has a brown coat with a black mane or tail. Their coat can be from a dark tan to a reddish brown. The legs of bay horses can be shaded black.
Black - To be considered a true black color, horses must be pure black. This means no light areas, whether they are facial markings or leg markings. Other horses, though, with white markings may still be called black.
Blue Roan - Blue Roans get there color from white and black hairs mixed together. Their head and lower legs are darker than there body. A blue roans mane and tail are normally black.
Buckskin - Buckskins have a gold or yellow body. Their mane and tail is black. Also their lower legs are black. Sometimes you will see them with white markings.
Chestnut - Chestnut's body, mane, and tail are a reddish color. Manes and tails can also be a tan color, called flaxen.They can be a dark or light chestnut, depending on the shade.
Chestnut (liver) - A liver chestnut has a dark reddish color.
Dun - A dun has a gold body with a black or brown mane and tail. Duns have a dark stripe running down there back. They also have horizontal stripes on their legs. This is one way you can tell if it's a dun or not.
Gray - There are lots of different shades of gray. Gray horses get the color gray from white hairs mixed with darker hairs. When gray horses are born, they are most of the time pretty dark. As they get older they start to loose there color and start to get lighter. When a gray horse get older and lighter, sometimes people will call them flea-bitten.
Grulla - A grulla horses color is a dark, smokey, gray, with a black mane and tail. They also have a dark stripe running down their back, and have dark legs (kind of like a dun).
Palomino - Palominos have golden, yellow bodies, with white manes and tails.
Pinto - Pintos have dark spots against a white coat. The Native Americans bred these horses to scare off the "spirits". When warriors would go on journies they would paint the human and ride on a pinto. This way the thought they would stay protected.
Red Dun - A red dun has a reddish tint to their body. Red duns have a dark stripe running down there back, like duns.
Red Roan - Red Roans get their color from red and white hairs mixed. Their head and lower legs are darker than the rest of their body. Their mane and tails can be black, red or flaxen.
Sorrel - The body color of a sorrel is a light red. Sorrels are hard to distinguish from chestnuts. Their mane and tail has a yellow tint to it.
White - There is no such thing as a white horse. If there was they would not be able to survive in the wild. These "white" horses are instead called Cremellos, or Albinos. They are an actual breed, believe it or not! Cremello/Albino horses have pink muzzles and light hooves. They sometimes have blue eyes.
